Why would an army general want to pocket a flat meant for a soldier’s widow?

Chetan Bhagat known for his candid comments gives a great story, something that might help us understand our stance and help us live a pious life.

The Meaning Of True Wealth

Let us understand the difference between Lakshmi and money for money’s sake

Happy Diwali to all readers. Since Diwali is a time we worship Lakshmi, or the goddess of wealth, i thought i would focus in this piece on the place of wealth in our society today. I also want to highlight the difference between Lakshmi and money, which may seem similar but are not the same.

    Before that, I start with an incident. Last week, i was in a session conducted by leading Hollywood filmmaker Oliver Stone, as part of a film festival organised in Mumbai. One of Oliver’s famous films is Wall Street (1984), which had its sequel come out recently. In the original film, Michael Douglas played Gordon Gekko, a crafty, unscrupulous, yet dashing financier. Gekko, with his signature line, “Greed, for lack of a better word, is good”, became one of the most memorable characters in US cinema history.

I asked Oliver why he thought Gekko became so popular. He said it was because Gekko is successful, especially in terms of money. It doesn’t matter that he is unethical, selfish, greedy, or a terrible human being. Americans became obsessed with material wealth in the 1980s. ‘Greed is good’ was just the validation they needed at the time. People didn’t care about a person’s values, people cared about a person’s money.

At a time of year when we pray to Lakshmi, or the goddess of material wealth, it is fitting to introspect if we too are slowly becoming the same. Why else do our political leaders loot the very people who elected them? Why do they stuff their own pockets with hundreds of crores they couldn’t possibly spend in their lifetimes? Why would an army general want to pocket a flat meant for a soldier’s widow? Why do so many intelligent, educated, respected bureaucrats succumb to corruption?

The answer is simple: money, or rather the importance our society has begun to attach to money.

Don’t get me wrong. Money is extremely important. Poverty is a disease, and surviving well in the modern world does require a certain amount of material wealth. However, above this level, people don’t seek money to satisfy material needs. Beyond that, money has other uses. There are many reasons why our politicians and government officials steal it. I list some of them.

One, money gives stature – the bigger your house, the more lavish your parties and the more high-end the places you shop – and gives you a certain place in society today that is above others. We have newspapers filled with ads of luxury goods, as if acquiring them is life’s ultimate aim. We celebrate rich lists and people who live in expensive houses. We make TV shows about expensive weddings and judge people by their residential address.

Today, a woman decked in jewellery and with a designer bag and shoes may be seen as of a higher stature than, say, a schoolteacher in a cotton sari who teaches hundreds of kids. People who earn high salaries make more news than, say, brave journalists who expose scams or selfless doctors who help the poor. In such a societal set-up, the temptation to seek wealth irrespective of the means is especially high.

Two, money gives a sense of security. This is a genuine benefit of money, as retirement planning is about building assets in your working life to be used later. However, politicians have a particular sense of insecurity owing to the innately uncertain nature of their jobs. They can be elected in and out of office. Money stolen by politicians is often kept for their party campaigns, to fight the next election. Being in power, and keeping that position is more important (and gets you more attention) than being a real leader and role model. So, you have elected MPs robbing citizens. Since the majority of Indian citizens don’t care about corruption issues and will vote on caste, religion or even factors such as dynasty over performance, the looting never stops.

Stature and security are constructs of the mind. The irony is, no matter how much money you have, if you don’t fundamentally value yourself from within, you will never feel that status despite the crores stashed away. That is why corrupt people keep on accumulating money until they get caught. They hope the money will give them a better place in life. However, since they have stolen and not earned the wealth, the crime gnaws at them from within and they can never be at peace. They have accumulated money for sure, but they haven’t accumulated Lakshmi.

Lakshmi is wealth accumulated through honest and fair means. Money can be stolen as well. Lakshmi brings peace and happiness to the person who earns it. Stolen money only brings emptiness to the soul. If you notice Lakshmi’s idol, she has gold coins around her, signifying wealth. However, she is also seated on a lotus flower, and holds lotuses in her hands. The lotus is a sign of purity and peace, signifiying spiritual well-being; of purity and beauty even in the muddy waters of the world. Without this peace, wealth has no meaning.

This festive season, when you pray, ask not for money, but for Lakshmi – wealth attained through pure means that keeps the mind as peaceful and beautiful as the lotus. The corrupt who steal from us don’t know this difference, and are merely collecting money. No matter how big their Diwali parties or lavish their puja ceremonies are, true Lakshmi will never come to them. She only comes to those who are pure at heart.

Crude Bomb - Bangalore Kingfisher flight

Kingfisher airlines flew with a crude bomb flew from Bangalore to Trivandrum. Quite scary as it sounds, the bomb was found by the cleaning crew who were cleaning-up the cargo section of the flight after all passengers and bags were off-loaded. Suspecting something unusual, they informed the authorities after a check by the bomb-squad, it was confirmed that the package, wrapped in a Malayalam newspaper was indeed a bomb. However, it was classified as a low-intensive bomb.

Now the following questions remain:

1. Who shipped the bomb?
2. Was the shipment from Bangalore?
3. How can the Bangalore airport be careless in terms of what is being shipped?
4. At how many levels did a lapse occur?
5. What was the intent of the shipment? (to scare or to blow a plan in mid-air?)

Top 10 2008 Indian Television Ads

We have to wait for long to see one good Indian Movie. But I guess the Indian ad. world churns out tiny splendid movies quite regularly. Here's a compilation of India's top 10 Television Ads.

10. Coca Cola - Minute Maid (Where is the pulp?") This one came into the top 10 just because of the amazing natural expressions on the actors' faces when they see the plump orange going burst.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/v/OR0zBjsVtWA&hl=en&fs=1]
==============================

9. Bajaj - XCD - A bike that probably didn't have many takers but yet, the ad. was much ahead of its times. The ad. is actually a series of ads shown one after the other, in a gap of time. First, it is the guy who seems to be gliding over the roads with a 'fictitious' bike under him and slowly, the entire bike starts getting built as he rides. Ah, Indians do know how to make a good movie, pity why they are not into movies and and pity even more than we are still being treated with David Dhawan and Subhash Ghai...

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/v/K2CawfyA9as&hl=en&fs=1]
==============================

8. Bajaj - XCD - Yet another delight and this time, no technology. Emotional quotient. 'Yeh tera zyaada hain' ad. It quite a different story Sun Dish TV guys have roped the same two models for a counter ad. but for a different product. I wonder if Bajaj is going to react...

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/v/lcglpL9E0eY&hl=en&fs=1]
==============================

7. Limca - Fresh ho jaao.
Sushma Reddy & Niketan Madhok did an amazing job with the water but yes, most of the credit should go to the graphic team and the musicians.

With each sip, there is amazing splash of water on to the partner. The song is simply cool and the video, outstanding.

==============================

6. Vodafone - Happy to help. One of the rare companies that is selling customer service. Pretty impressive. Another company that did this is Marurti. Vodafone has launched multiple splendid ads, this of course is one. The "daily quote" series (angry wife - silent husband ad), "Irfan Khan" series, "Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein...".

==============================

5. Virgin Mobile - Think hatke. This ad. is an absolute show stealer and all credit for the lovely expressions on the girl's face. Bold ad. but done very tastefully. Not the favourite of most parents.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/v/ROFaEycLs_0&hl=en&fs=1]
==============================

4. Czechoslovakia - Max New York - A little kid innocuously uttering the word daddy which (little did he know!) tosses his parents into a frenzy trying to get him to repeat more and more words after them. The baby manages just fine until the word ‘czechoslovakia’ catches the dad’s fancy and he desperately coaxes the baby to say that magic word. The baby just returns a hapless look and the dad has to console himself with the successful rendition of ‘banana’. (Banana bola)

3. Madhya Pradesh Tourism - Hindustan ka dil dekho. I really had to watch this ad multiple times to jot down the song. Tried my best to get the words right and tridt to capitalize all nouns. Any MPites, please correct me if I got something wrong.

2. Tata Sky - Aamir - Gul combination. This ad. needs no introduction. "Pause karke bahu marunga"

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/v/Bddk-af6kBk&hl=en&fs=1]
==============================

1. Max New York Life Insurance - Karo Zyaada ka Iraada

What a cool song ... chaand toh mere paas hain, suraj ko laa do zaraa. One of the best ads because it delivers the message. Singer is amazing and the concept, kind of similar to Kailash Kher's tauba - tauba, revolves around the wheel of fortune. Guy with good hair wants a cool bike, the biker wants a girl friend, she wants to be a mother, the mother wants a necklace, the necklace is picked by a rich man, the bald rich man wants the first guy's good hair!

Side Middle Birth

Side Middle Birth is hitherto completely unknown seat in the India famous Sleeper class coaches. So where did this come from? From Lalu's cost cutting - money making mind!

It is true that the sleeper class fares have not been increased and on the contrary AC class coache fares have been reduced Then how does Lalu ji make money? Through the other smart advances, or some call 'bad ideas'.

> Change usual express trains into Super Fast category -
Outcome - additional charge levied through the reservation charge comes to IR :-)

> Increase the seating capacity of the Sleeper class and third AC coaches
Outcome - More revenue per square seat for IR :-)

Both the plans have been given a thumbs down by passengers. The first plan does not necessarily mean a faster moving train. The second plan has left many unsatisfied passengers. The side upper and the side lower births adjacent to the passage are undoubtedly the most liked seats in the sleeper class coaches. However, the introduction of a side middle seat, quite difficult to even imagine, has caused a lot of discomfort. The passenger in the middle seat does not have a backrest and s/he tries to take support at the back, s/he is going to be hurt by the bottle holder and the switches. The SU and SL were not seats meant to have another seat in between. The guy who thought of this trip should be made to sit on that sit for the Jammu Tawi - Kanyakumari or the Guwahiati - Trivandrum train. The usual 72 seater Sleeper class is now a 84 seater coach.

And the icing is the numbering confusion. Apparently, the reservation system has not been updated about this system and the LB on your reservation ticket may not translate into a LB in the train. The numbers on the seats are cut out and I could see the numbering system changed thrice and this means, you have to really fall on luck on your fellow passenger's brains to understand which is your actual seat. Or wait for the Ticket Examiner to show your seat and until then you are bound to have a good time with the fellow passengers.

The coaches are being mass manufactured and they are being introduced in many trains. Yesvantpur - Kannur express train no. 6527 is the one among the first trains to try this.

Since the SUB and SLB were the usual face to face seats with a nice seating angles that can be changed especially if both the passengers are known to each other. But now, it will be another passenger who will be sitting in between! Eeks!

Delayed government reaction (Mumbai Terror Attack)

Sometimes, calling our country, a place known for variety is a shame. Amidst the brave acts of hotel staff to save lives and the good work that the NSGs did to get some control over the entire situation, we cannot forget the prime points:

Why did the government take so long to come to a consensus to take a decision. Decision to bring in armed forces should have happened long before. In fact, such decisions take be taken in minutes. But that's the least of the problem; look at the other quesionable points:

1. NSGs took almost 3 hours to scramble and come to Mumbai
2. They were brought to ground zero in BEST buses (The choppers were used much later)
3. The NSGs were not given any hotel layout for the first few moments and they had to act on their own

Where do these points take us to? It takes us to believe that we are not well equipped to handle such impromptu terror attacks.

Kannur, a terrorist hub?

It is rather unfortunate to see Kerala, one of the most beautiful places planet earth, turning into a place terrorist hub. While the state in general is peaceful but the recent findings from Kannur and the Kerala connection with the recent Kashimiri militant deaths is quite scary.

Over a 100 hundred boms were found just two weeks ago in a raid in Kannur. The terrorist game plan is rather simple. Lure impoverished youth into these activities in exchange of money. This is where the whole world comes in full circle.

> Had all the economies around the world be good, unemployement wouldn't have been a problem.
> Had India had a poupluation that was under control, unemployement wouldn't have been a problem.

So what need to do is act like global citizens and encourage family planning. The outcome won't be seen today or tomorrow. It will take times, may be decades. But that shouldn't be surprising as we won't be able to see terrorism being wiped out completely. It's just not possible.
